In honor of the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week, Women Building Success sponsored the Trades Games Challenge held at the Local 455 Steamfitters Pipefitters Local 455 Training Center in St. Paul. While approximately 190 were registered, more than 200 attended the event designed for the beginner and journeyworker alike.
The competition featured activities from several trades, from iron workers to electricians to plumbers. The key was making it more sophisticated than a Construct Tomorrow event but to not be intimidating to someone who came to check out a career in the trades.
Anyone who tried a particular activity received a ticket just for participating. Their ticket went into a drawing at the end of the evening for a chance to win a prize – just for trying. “Even some journeyworkers found it had been a while since they tried a particular activity,” said Jenny Winkelaar, a Women Building Success board member.
